An Introduction to Immigration

Just like the United States of America and Australia, Canada is also another country that is recognized as the country that welcomes most immigrants. As compared to other countries of Europe, Asia, and Africa, this immigration is becoming more popular in recent years.

Immigration is the process of movement of people from their living country to another foreign country for a certain period for study, work, or business purposes.

It is defined as the movement of people from their home country or region to another country, and that is not their native to live.

Certain specific economic factors contribute to immigration, such as aspiration to acquire higher wages, improve the standard of living, have better job opportunities, and get an education. Along with this, there are also non-economic factors that include, war, natural disasters, and political restrictions.

With the developments of transportation and technology, immigration has become more popular these days and rapidly increasing worldwide.

There are many significant reasons for which people leave their home countries, including political issues, family issues, financial issues, and natural disasters. In simple words, the immigrants choose to move to another country to change their lifestyles. They prefer to move to another country to obtain a higher standard of living and quality lifestyle.

Who Is An Immigrant?

Immigrant also used as a migrant, the foreign-born and international migrant in different countries. In simple words, an immigrant is a person who lives in a country other than his birth or original country. No matter what if that person has received the citizenship of the destination country, served in its military, married to a native, or some other status – he or she will be called an international migrant forever.

Some facts about immigration – about 3.4% of the global population (258 million of the world’s  7.7 billion people) are international migrants.

The share has increased slightly in the past couple of decades. And most of these immigrants are from less developed countries.

When we look at the gender-wise immigrant data about half of them are women, and the share of women immigrants has been increasing everywhere except Asia.

Categories of Immigrants:

An immigrant is a primary term that is used to refer to a person who is living in a country other than his birth country. However, this immigrant is categorized as below:

  • Naturalized Citizen: after certain years of living as a permanent resident. The immigrant can choose to apply for naturalizing and obtain the benefits and authority of citizenship in their preferred country.
  • Permanent Resident: they are the legal residents, though not the citizens of their destination country. This title comes from employment, family relationships, or any other channel, it is a basic criterion to apply for citizenship.
  • Refugees: they were forced to flee as they were not able to count on the protection of their government. However, this is not for everyone who migrates considered refugees. To obtain this title the migrant must show that he or she was persecuted or has a fear of persecution based on religion, ethnicity, political beliefs, or membership in a particular social group.
