A strategic immigration plan that addresses labor shortages and advances Canada’s economic, social, and cultural objectives was recently unveiled by the IRCC. The plan centers on critical skills.
Priority for International Students
The IRCC highlights that international students applying for Canadian Permanent Residence (PR) should be given priority if their talents match the needs of the labor market. The strategy seeks to strengthen ties between employers, academic institutions, and students in order to assist students in obtaining PR status and integrating highly sought-after skills into the workforce.
IRCC’s Measures
The International Student Program (ISSP) is considering incorporating work-integrated learning, and the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is being updated to support essential industries in order to accomplish these aims. In order to influence potential foreign students’ transition from students to workers and eventual PR status, the department also intends to highlight high-demand industries and skill sets to them.
High-Demand Skills Unveiled
Although the precise talents that will be targeted for future economic immigration are not yet specified, recent modifications to Canada’s Express Entry system provide some guidance. The system invited people with professional skills and linguistic ability through category-based selections. Healthcare, STEM, Trades, Transportation, and Agriculture are some of the categories.
Proficiency in French
The IRCC’s objective of matching immigrant capabilities with labor market demands is in line with this category-based strategy. The Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) in Canada, which are intended to be the main route for economic immigration, depend heavily on these in-demand professions.
Beyond Students: In-Demand Skills for All
International students are not the only ones with in-demand skills; Express Entry will keep focusing on workers in vital industries like healthcare and housing that have a consistent shortage of employees. The government intends to increase public awareness of its assistance for immigrants’ ability to recognize their credentials and make good use of their abilities.
